A technique often used by portrait and
glamor photographers, is to enlarge and brighten the subjects eyes.
The following is a summary of how this is done in Photoshop.
1) Use the Polygon tool to select an area around one of the subject’s
eyes (you don’t have to be too precise in the selection).
2) While holding down the “Shift” key, select an area around
the other eye.
3) After both eyes are selected, hit Control J. This duplicates a layer
that only includes the selected eyes.
4) Turn off the background layer so you are only seeing the layer with
the eyes (to turn off the layer, click on the eye in the left of the
“Layers” window).
5) You should now only see the layer with the selected eyes. You may
want to zoom in to enlarge the eyes a little. This will make it easier
to work on them.
6) Using the eraser tool, clean up the eyes by erasing the residual
area around the eyes.
7) You can brighten the eyes if desired by using the dodge/burn tool,
or any other method (brightness/contrast, etc).
8) You can also enlarge the eyes slightly by going to Edit, Free Transform.
A window that shows 100.00% for width (W) and height (H) will appear
at the top. Increase these percentages slightly between 102% and 108%.
Note: Stay on the low side for children. When finished, hit enter twice.
9) To view the image with the adjusted eyes, turn the background layer
back on by clicking where the eye had been in the left of the “Layers”
window.
10) To view the impact, turn the adjusted layer on and off by clicking
the eye in the left of the “Layers” window for this layer.
